Meal planning is one of the best ways to stay on track with your health goals, reduce stress around mealtime, and avoid last-minute takeout decisions. But if you’ve ever found yourself frustrated, overwhelmed, or stuck in a meal-prep rut, you might be making one (or more) of these common mistakes.

Let’s dive into what could be holding you back—and how to simplify meal planning so it works for you, not against you!

Mistake #1: Making Your Meal Plan Too Complicated

If your meal plan looks more like a gourmet cookbook than a practical strategy, it’s time to simplify! While variety is great, trying to cook new, elaborate meals every day can lead to burnout.

Fix It:  Stick to a few go-to recipes each week and rotate them. A mix of quick meals, batch-cooked staples, and easy-to-assemble options keeps things realistic and stress-free.

Mistake #2: Not Prepping Ingredients in Advance

Planning meals is great, but if you don’t prep anything ahead of time, a busy day can throw everything off.

Fix It:   Spend 30-60 minutes prepping ingredients at the start of the week. Chop veggies, clean fruit and pack in glass containers so that you can see them when you open the fridge. This is what I like to call “Salad Bar in the Fridge”.  Now that some of the heavy lifting has been done, you can use the different ingredients for different dishes or snacks.

Mistake #3: Not Including Quick & Flexible Meal Options

Life happens—work meetings run late, kids have activities and unexpected plans pop up. If every meal requires a lot of time and effort, you’re more likely to ditch your plan in favor of convenience foods.

Fix It:   Plan for at least two backup meals  that take 10 minutes or less (think: scrambled eggs & avocado toast, protein smoothies, or sheet-pan meals).

Mistake #4: Ignoring Your Schedule When Planning Meals

If you’re planning elaborate dinners on your busiest nights, chances are, you won’t have the energy to cook them.

Fix It:  Match your meal plan to your schedule. Choose slow cooker meals or leftovers on busy days and save more involved recipes for when you have extra time.

Mistake #5: Failing to Incorporate Foods You Actually Enjoy

A meal plan filled with boring, repetitive, or “diet” foods isn’t sustainable. If you don’t enjoy what you’re eating, you’ll be more tempted to stray from your plan.

Fix It:   Include foods you genuinely love! A healthy meal plan can (and should) be delicious and satisfying.

Mistake #6: Not Having a Clear Plan for Grocery Shopping

Without a solid grocery list, you’re more likely to overspend, forget key ingredients, or buy things you won’t use.

Fix It:   Before heading to the store, create a detailed grocery list based on your meal plan. Stick to it to save time and money!
